Fitness trackers now come in three main shapes: the slim smart ring, the lightweight fitness band and the full smartwatch. They all count steps and track activity, but they feel very different day to day.
Smart ring
- Feels like: jewellery. Small and discreet.
- Good for: sleep and everyday activity tracking, and people who dislike wearing something on the wrist.
- Trade-off: no screen, so you read your stats in the app.
Fitness band
- Feels like: a light, simple wrist strap.
- Good for: steps, workouts and sleep on a budget, with a small screen for quick checks.
- Trade-off: fewer smart features than a watch.
Smartwatch
- Feels like: a mini phone on your wrist, with a bigger display.
- Good for: multiple sport modes, a brighter screen and notifications.
- Trade-off: larger and usually needs charging more often.
How to decide
- Do you want a screen? If yes, choose a band or a watch.
- Do you sleep badly with things on your wrist? A ring may suit you.
- Do you like lots of sport modes and a bright display? Go for a watch.
